Digital literacy is what you can do online. Digital citizenship is how you conduct yourself while doing it. The first keeps you capable. The second decides what kind of reputation follows you around.

What it means in practice

• Treating people the way you would face to face, including the ones you disagree with.
• Checking something before you forward it, because spreading a lie quickly is still spreading a lie.
• Respecting other people privacy as carefully as you guard your own.
• Knowing that what you post can be read years later by someone deciding whether to hire you, lend to you or work with you.
• Standing up for someone being targeted, rather than joining in or looking away.
• Using what you know to help the person behind you rather than keeping the advantage.

Why it matters more than it used to

Your digital footprint is now part of your reputation whether you manage it or not. Employers search. Clients search. It compounds quietly in both directions.
